The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced consumers should stop using Bugaboo Cameleon and Bugaboo Donkey Model Strollers unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.
Hazard: A button on the stroller’s carrycot/seat carry handle can become disengaged and cause the handle to detach, posing fall and choking hazards to young children.
Bugaboo, the children’s brand that introduced $1,000 strollers to the world, is recalling more than 50,000 of its Donkey and Cameleon models after finding a problem with the handle that poses a falling and choking hazard to children.
The Dutch company said a button on the stroller’s carrycot or seat carry handle can disengage and cause the handle to detach, which can injure tots. The voluntary recall affects about 46,300 strollers in the U.S. and an additional 4,440 in Canada.
Bugaboo said it has received 58 reports of handles detaching, but so far they’ve heard of no injuries. Customers should remove the handle from strollers immediately and contact Bugaboo for a free replacement handle, the company said.
The expensive strollers were sold at retailers such as Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Toys R Us and online retailers, including Bugaboo.com.
The Bugaboo Donkey, best known for its ability to convert from a single stroller into a side-by-side double, was sold from January 2011 to December 2012. It retailed for $1,200 to $1,600. The Cameleon was sold between September 2009 and June 2012 for around $980.
This recall involves the carry handles on Bugaboo Cameleon and Bugaboo Donkey model strollers with detachable carrycots/seats. The strollers were sold with a base, sun canopy and other accessories in various colors. A fabric tag on the side of the sun canopy has Bugaboo and the model name. Strollers included in the recall have a serial number that falls within the range listed below. Serial numbers are printed on the stroller’s chassis, located under the carrycot/seat.
