Mattel issues new massive China toy recall

The recalled toys include about 7.3 million Polly Pocket, Batman Magna, Doggie Daycare and Shonen Jump’s One Piece play sets with the small magnets.

According to a statement from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Mattel, about 2.4 million of the play sets were recalled.

An industry official said that China knew about problems with magnets on toys as long ago as March.

“We knew about the situation, because since March some toys had been recalled due to magnetic parts problems,” an official with the China Toy Association, who declined to be identified, said.

Mattel recalled about 1.5 million Chinese-made Fisher-Price toys – including characters such as Dora the Explorer, Big Bird and Elmo – that contain lead paint. In June, about 1.5 million Thomas & Friends wooden railway toys, imported from China and distributed by the RC2 Corp. were recalled because of lead paint.

Lead is toxic if ingested by young children. Under current regulations, children’s products found to have more than .06 percent lead accessible to users are subject to a recall.  There is no excuse for lead to be found in toys entering this country.  It’s totally unacceptable and it needs to stop.

THe CEO said the company has stopped selling the recalled products, instructed retailers to pull them from the shelves and made a production change. Mattel is also offering replacement products.

Unsafe Toy Lawsuits

People who are hurt by defective toys or products may be qualified to recover financial damages from the product manufacturer for their medical bills, pain and suffering, wrongful death, and other damages.

Children’s toys, cribs, and other household products are responsible for the deaths and injuries of hundreds of children each year. Defective cribs can pose a risk of strangulation or entrapment to young infants, toys may contain sharp edges or small pieces that can be swallowed, and other children’s products may defectively designed or built.

Federal safety officials announce hundreds of product recalls each year, but sadly, many dangerous products are not recalled until children have been killed or injured.
